Arrow Right store bought or homemade

My son is 4 months and I am looking to start feeding. He eats organic cereal and I am not sure if I want to make his food or just buy. Anyone ever make their babies food? If so any good tips?

Thank you

I bought baby food and also made my own. My mom made her own all the time, and seen my other family members do it while I was growing up. Personally I think its much better for baby due to the lack of preservatives and other junk that some companies put in their baby foods. Before we would sit down to eat i would just simply throw whatever we made for dinner in a blender, pour it into an ice cube tray (sterilized of course) and then freeze it. Can be stored for up to 3 months...and is wayyy cheaper in the end. Its awesome too because you just throw a cube or two of food into a microwavable dish and thaw....According to health nurses and such though, this may not be the best idea...so I guess you should choose at your own discretion.

When I first started solid food with my dd, I bought the food because at the time I was at my parents for three months and it was just easier...
Now that we are back home and she is getting older (stage 3 type foods) it's a combination. I find fruits and vegetables easy to mush in the food processor or by hand but she is still doesn't like our dinner in the food processor so I tend to buy the Gerber meals in a jar. Hopefully over the next few months she'll eat what we eat for dinner.

I think I'm going to do a combo of both as well. If I were planning on being a SAHM I'd say all homemade for sure but I have to work to keep our house! I'd love to be a SAHM, though!

My son never really liked store bought baby food, so I made my own. It was really quite simple, and saved quite a bit of money. I bought a food processor and steamer (about $50 together). I'd steam fresh sweet potatoes, peaches, chicken... you name it. Then I'd put it in the food processor, turn it into mush, then freeze it in individual size servings using an ice tray. When they were frozen, I'd put all the cubes of one type in ziplock freezer bags. They last for about 1 month.

none of my babies had bought baby food - it was always just so much easier to take some of our food and not season it - it would just take minutes to cook up a batch of veggies or chicken or what ever they were eating. to be honest I dont think I ever needed to cook anything different to what we were having. The kids all still love home cooking!

I mainly make my own and found to start with I would steam the vegetables and then add water to blend them although I found that my wee girl would not eat them. I then realised with steaming the flavour is very strong so now I just throw all the vegies in a pot and boil them, then blend and she seems to like them better.

hope this helps

Good on you for wanting to make your own.

It was hard with my first child to find the time to make all of his food so I wouldnt have to buy packaged . After a few months of trying, I eventually turned to jarred foods, which I felt bad about but he did just fine with them. Its even harder now to make food at home for my new baby while working and taking care of 2 kids. I am trying to go with a combination of home made and jarred. I read a book called "Healthy Baby Happy Home" that gave me some good organic packaged food suggestions so at least I am sticking with products that are all natural. The book offered suggestions for products I could find right in my local store and gave tons of price comparisons because organic foods can be pricey. I still buy organic veggies and fruits to puree when i am cooking but if I just really dont have time I turn to my jarred food. As long as your kid eats natural ingredients, I dont think its a big deal if it is "packaged" or not.
