my ds is turning 3 next month and he is already trying on his own. I didn't want to push him to do it. He always tells me before he goes #2 but most the time he wont do it on the potty. I figure he will do it soon enough

My son was 3 when he started to show interest in using the potty also. #2 definitely came later. I would always encourage him and even sat with him with some books to look at. That at least got him comfortable with sitting on the potty. Eventually it was my husband who got him to go #2 on the potty. I think it also helped that he was in a pre-k 3 program where other children were out of diapers. Once he saw that other kids were doing it, maybe it just didn't seem so bad?We skipped the baby potty altogether though. We had one, but he never used it.
I say just be patient and encouraging. He'll get it.

My 2 1/2 year old pretty much potty trained on her own at about 20 months. She was in cloth diapers, so I think that helped her PT sooner. I was happy because I had baby #4 a few months after she was out of diapers, so I only had one in diapers!
My son potty trained just before his 3rd birthday and he was super easy too. With him all I did was buy a bag of M&M's and I gave him 1 every time he used the potty. He pretty much was PT'd from day one....he really wanted those candies. LoL!

I am hoping to start showing him the potty soon. He knows what the big toilet is since well..last week he stood in it. Other than that he never goes into the bathroom. Its gated off

Hmm...
With my oldest dd she was 20months old when she was both night/day trained.
With my middle ds he was trained at 3 1/2 because he wasn't interested and couldn't care less.
My youngest will be 2 this month and I figure we are going to start training her this spring/summer when she appears to be more ready.
Right now she confuses poop with pee and vice versa. LOL!!
Plus, with just finishing up with Noah I want a break from potty training!!

The thing that worked with us was the 72 hour method.
Every time he wet/dirtied himself we made him clean himself up and we stuffed him full of all the apple juice he wanted and fed him uber salty foods.
It worked though even though it sounds really harsh.
I hated the idea when we started it but it worked like a charm.
